[Repurposing a historic merchant house into a Cross-Generational day Care Center ]

“In the dynamic urban landscape of Japan,
the impact of shifting demographics on urban planning is unmistakable,
highlighting the need for a nuanced understanding and strategic intervention.

This thesis project delves into the role of adaptive reuse in addressing Japan’s surplus of vacant buildings, focusing on reimagining traditional merchant houses (machiya) in Kyoto.

The chosen program aims to explore not only the architectural significance of abandoned machiya but also their potential to serve as a new typology of aging “in place.”

By repurposing these structures into a Cross-Generational Day Care Center, the project seeks to uncover the cultural and material layers that intricately bind them to the collective memory of urban communities.”

"일본의 역동적인 도시 환경 속에서 인구 구조 변화가 도시 계획에 미치는 영향은 매우 분명하며, 이를 이해하고 전략적으로 접근해야 할 필요성이 강조되고 있습니다.

졸업 프로젝트는 일본의 과잉 빈 건물 문제를 해결하는 데 있어 적응적 재활용(adaptive reuse)의 역할을 탐구하며, 특히 교토의 전통 상인 주택(마치야)을 재구성하는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다.

선정된 프로그램은 버려진 마치야의 건축적 중요성을 탐구하는 것뿐만 아니라, 이를 새로운 형태의 지역 내에서의 노후화(aging in place) 를 위한 새로운 유형으로 활용할 가능성을 모색하고자 합니다.

이러한 구조물을 세대 간 데이케어 센터로 재활용함으로써, 이 프로젝트는 도시 공동체의 집단적 기억과 복잡하게 얽혀 있는 문화적, 물질적 층위를 밝혀내는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다."
